Tesla’s Diarmuid O’Connell issued a one-two slap to fellow automakers yesterday by saying:
You guys stink
You guys stink
They stink because they’re making electrical “appliances” instead of cool EVs. And they stink because they’re begging the teacher to scale the grading system so nobody flunks. That is, they’re trying to skirt America’s ever-tougher fuel economy standards.
“But people want their SUVs.” That’s the consensus from the class, apparently unaware that Tesla is about to unleash a zero-emissions SUV that will castrate all others, proving it’s possible to build the impossible.
Sigh. The irony here is that despite incessant headlines about Tesla’s encroaching competition, that competition is so glaringly absent that Tesla execs have to make public pleas to get some competition to beef up the segment, drive down costs for all, and wean us off oil.
